Summary. Italy presents an extraordinary faunal richness, often unexpected: 55,000 species are reported, thanks to the privileged position of the Peninsula compared to the European continent and the entire Mediterranean area, and to the diversity of territories, soils and climates.

This volume, produced by the Centro di Ecologia Alpina and the Italian Touring Club, under the supervision of the Italian Ministry of Environment, illustrates and describes the complex and articulated framework of the animal population, with particular attention to its origins, to its current composition and its problems of conservation.

The work moves from the work produced with the recent Checklist of the species of the Italian fauna and revisits, after forty years, the classic monograph on the Italian fauna published in 1959 by the Italian Touring Club, to which many of the most qualified Italian zoologists of that time have collaborated. A new group of researchers has been set up, in order to produce – with this book – a new way of reading the animal population in Italy, structured per environments and with a particular attention to the continuous and rapid change of this fauna, whose richness in species is the highest in Europe.
