Summary. With the completion of the Checklist of the species of the Italian fauna (1993-1995), Italy was the first European country to produce a complete list of the specie of its fauna, counting 55,656 species and resulting a territory extremely rich in biodiversity.

An introductory part of the book describes the work performed from the Checklist up to now and the plans for the future. In addition, it deals with the chorotypes of the Italian fauna; its endemisms; the richness of species and rarity; the Italian faunal provinces; the chronogeonemic analysis; the alien species of Italy; the base for a first Red List of species; the strategies for the conservation of fauna.

Starting from the Checklist, 10,000 species – selected as faunistic and biogeographic indicators – were analyzed in a deeper detail for distribution and ecology, thanks to the work of 68 contributors. The species records are provided in electronic format on the attached CD-ROM.
